Today, we honor the memory of the victims of the Pontic Genocide, a crime against humanity committed during the Ottoman Empire that has left an indelible mark on Hellenism and our historical consciousness. And at the same time, we honor a people, a civilization and a history that spanned the centuries through periods of prosperity and splendor, to the unspeakable barbarity of persecution and uprooting. This day serves as a reminder of the need to defend historical truth and to work tirelessly for the international recognition of the Genocide, as an act of justice and moral restoration.
The Pontic Hellenism, despite the unimaginable hardships and tragic losses that marked it in the early 20th century, managed to survive by finding refuge in the motherland, to rebuild with unyielding energy and moral strength, and to contribute decisively to the social, economic and cultural progress of our country. The strength, dignity and collective memory of the Pontians constitute a valuable part of our national identity.
Greece, faithful to the principles of democracy, peace and respect for human rights, continues to promote dialogue, reconciliation and international cooperation. The recognition of historical crimes is not an act of confrontation, but a foundation for a world where justice and human dignity prevail.
Today, we join our voices with all those who are fighting to deter all forms of violence, hatred and persecution. The memory of the victims of the Pontic Genocide calls on us to remain united, determined and committed to the values that form the foundation of peaceful coexistence among peoples.
