The President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine An. Tassoulas, met with the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Jordan Mazen El Qadi, who is on an official visit to Greece.
Mr. Tassoulas referred to the excellent relations between Greece and Jordan, which are characterized by strong bonds of friendship, mutual respect and trust, and extend across a wide range of areas, from political dialogue and culture to trade, tourism and parliamentary cooperation. In this context, he emphasized our country’s steadfast support for the further strengthening of relations between the European Union and Jordan.
Furthermore, he referred to the particular importance Greece attaches to parliamentary diplomacy, which contributes substantially to further deepening and strengthening the ties between the two countries.
The President of the Hellenic Republic also emphasized the important role of Greece and Jordan as pillars of stability and peace in the broader region during the current turbulent period, while at the same time sharing Jordan’s concerns regarding the situation in the West Bank.
With regard to Gaza, Mr. Tassoulas emphasized that Greece supports the full implementation of the Peace Plan and the advancement of its second phase, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803. He referred to the need for a clear political horizon for the Palestinian people and a credible political process that will lead to an agreed two-state solution, ensuring lasting peace, security and prosperity for Israelis and Palestinians.
At this point, he also referred to the increasing Turkish provocations against Greece regarding the now frequent violations of airspace and the illegal establishment of marine parks, in violation of every principle of the law of the sea.
Finally, he emphasized the particular importance of preserving the status quo in the Holy Sites in Jerusalem, acknowledging the historic role of the King of Jordan as Custodian of the Holy Sites.
For his part, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Jordan first conveyed the greetings of King Abdullah II of Jordan and Crown Prince Hussein to the President of the Hellenic Republic.
He praised the excellent relations between the two countries and expressed his desire to strengthen them at the parliamentary level, placing emphasis on the areas of education, health, as well as religious and cultural tourism.
He highlighted as key common elements between the two countries the respect for international law and the United Nations, as well as the principle of the peaceful resolution of disputes.
Finally, he expressed his appreciation for Greece’s stance on the Middle East, the situation in Gaza, and Greece’s recognition of the role of the King of Jordan as Custodian of the Holy Sites in Jerusalem.
