The President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine An. Tassoulas, on the occasion of the completion on October 1, 2026, of 66 years since the proclamation of the Republic of Cyprus, sent a letter to H.E. the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, extending warm congratulations and best wishes for peace, progress and prosperity on behalf of the Greek people and himself personally.
In his letter, Mr. Tassoulas emphasized that despite the deep wounds caused by the Turkish invasion, the territorial dismemberment and the continued occupation for 52 years, the Republic of Cyprus has emerged not only as a prosperous member state of the European Union but also as a pillar of peace, stability and growth in the broader Eastern Mediterranean region.
Referring to Cyprus’ highly successful Presidency of the Council of the EU during the first half of 2026, amid intense geopolitical instability in the wider region, the President of the Hellenic Republic noted that this success demonstrated that the Republic of Cyprus is capable of effectively managing even the most complex challenges and missions. He subsequently expressed his conviction that the upcoming 4th Greece-Cyprus Intergovernmental Summit will reaffirm the unbreakable fraternal ties between the two countries and will give further impetus to the ongoing deepening of their cooperation across a wide range of areas of mutual benefit.
Mr. Tassoulas went on to emphasize Greece’s commitment to the goal of reunifying the island of Cyprus, by finding a just, sustainable and comprehensive solution, based on the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions and in accordance with international law, the European acquis and the principles and values of the EU, a commitment which, as he emphasized, will remain as long as the Cyprus issue remains open. He further stressed that Greece, with the unanimous support of the political forces and the people, stands behind Cyprus’ efforts to restart substantive talks aimed at a solution that will free Cyprus from the occupying forces and the anachronistic system of guarantees.
Finally, the President of the Hellenic Republic expressed his heartfelt wishes to the President of the Republic of Cyprus for personal health, strength and success in his work.
