It is with sadness that I was informed of the passing of Giorgos Vassiliou, former President of the Republic of Cyprus, a visionary and a staunch supporter of Europe, who left behind a rich political legacy. A political leader who worked steadfastly for the prosperity, security and the European perspective of Cyprus, for the protection of the rights of Cypriot Hellenism, for the resolution of the Cyprus issue, the end of the illegal Turkish occupation and the reunification of the island. I extend my sincere condolences to the brotherly Cypriot people, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and his family and loved ones.
