Statement following the events for the Day of Remembrance of the Genocide of the Greeks of Pontus

The President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine An. Tassoulas, attended the Memorial Service for the Day of Remembrance of the Genocide of the Greeks of Pontus at the Cathedral of Athens.

He then proceeded to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where he laid a wreath and made the following statement:

“Every year in May, we officially honor the memory of the tragic victims of the Genocide of the Greeks of Pontus by the Young Turk regime.

We remember, honor and keep alive the memory of the violent and systematic eradication of the centuries-old presence of Pontic Hellenism in Asia Minor.

At the same time, we claim international recognition of the Genocide of the Pontic Greeks as a minimum tribute to the lives of those people who literally suffered martyrdom, but also as a contribution to efforts to prevent the recurrence of similar heinous and cruel crimes in the future.
