Statement at the Armenian Genocide Memorial

The President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine An. Tassoulas, in the framework of his visit to Armenia for the 8th Summit of the European Political Community, held in Yerevan, visited the Tsitsernakabert Armenian Genocide Memorial, where he laid a wreath and made the following statement:

“Within the framework of the 8th Summit of the European Political Community, taking place today and tomorrow in Yerevan, Armenia, I had the opportunity to visit the Armenian Genocide Memorial, where I paid tribute along with the Greek delegation to the 1.5 million victims of the Genocide.

One hundred and eleven years after the Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman Empire, the memory of this event has not ceased to unfold dramatically, the sorrow and grief have not ceased, for the simple reason that the need for acceptance of the historical truth by the perpetrator of this crime has not yet been fulfilled.

Greece is known to have similar dramatic experiences to those of Armenia, and our country keeps the memory of this tragic crime alive. And we believe that only by keeping alive the memory of similar crimes of Genocide will they not be repeated in the future.

Greece and Armenia are connected by deep historical ties and continuously develop relations of friendship, solidarity and close cooperation. Both of our countries are deeply committed to the values and principles of democracy, human rights and international law. And this shared commitment is our compass in a world facing many and varied challenges and uncertainties.”

Afterwards, Mr. Tassoulas visited the Matenadaran Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, where he was welcomed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan and the Director of the Institute Ara Khzmaliyan. A guided tour followed.

The President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine An. Tassoulas, is accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ηaris Theoharis, the Permanent Representative of Greece to the European Union Ambassador Ioannis Vrailas and the Ambassador of Greece to Armenia Christos Sofianopoulos.
