Meeting with Mr. Li Xi, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection

The President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine An. Tassoulas, received Mr. Li Xi, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, who is visiting our country.

During the meeting, the President of the Republic stated that Greece and China, since establishing diplomatic relations in 1972, have continuously developed their bilateral cooperation, always on the basis of the principles of the United Nations Charter. He emphasized that the two countries, representing two very ancient civilizations, cooperate closely in the field of culture, and thanked China for its principled stance on Greece’s legitimate request for the return of the Parthenon Marbles.

Mr. Tassoulas then expressed his concern about the multiple crises afflicting the modern world, such as the armed conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and elsewhere. In this context, he stressed the importance of China’s role as a member of the UN Security Council in restoring conditions for peace and stability on the basis of international law. He also expressed Greece’s willingness, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, to work with China in this direction.

Finally, Mr. Tassoulas welcomed Mr. Li Xi to Athens and expressed his feelings of appreciation towards the Chinese President Mr. Xi Jinping.

From his part, Mr. Li Xi expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and conveyed the message of the Chinese President in favor of further strengthening the close cooperation between Greece and China in all areas of mutual interest, with an emphasis on trade, culture, and tourism.

He also stressed that Greece and China, as ancient civilizations, continuously develop their dialogue and cooperation for the benefit of both peoples.
